Welcome to the South Parkland Youth Association (SPYA) Softball website!
Registration for the 2017 Spring Season is OPEN!
The Parkland Spring Softball Season runs from the end of April through the first week of June followed by the playoffs and All-Star games the second and third week of June. The Lehigh Valley League Softball Season starts and finishes about 2 weeks later than the Parkland Softball League Season. Practices and team rosters will be announced the first week in April. Practices are typically 2 – 2.5 hours twice a week, 1 or 2 weeknights and 1 practice on the weekend either Saturday or Sunday. The practice schedule is determined by the coach. However, coaches are encouraged to have practices on different days during the weeks to ensure players can make most practices.
Practices and home games are played at Springhouse Middle School fields with a few games scheduled to play at Patriot’s (Pates) Park.
Game schedules are set by the league associated with the team and are released about 2-3 weeks prior to the first game of the season. Parkland Softball League and Lehigh Valley League will send coaches the draft schedule before the season starts. This will be sent out to the parents/players. At that time, it is imperative you review this schedule and inform the coach if there are any conflicts with your daughter attending any game. Every team has about 5-7 days to try and reschedule the game prior to the start of the season. Once this time lapses the League will not allow games to be rescheduled unless it is due to weather.
SPYA Softball offers players eligible for 12U and 14U to try out for our 14U Lehigh Valley League team. Please note that this may incur additional costs. I encourage all players eligible to try out for the Lehigh Valley League team. Any player that does not make the Lehigh Valley League team will be assigned to a Parkland Softball League team.
In the future, if we have enough players that can compete at the higher level in the Lehigh Valley League we may offer Lehigh Valley League teams at 10U and 12U.
Age is the age of the player on January 1, 2017. In other words, if your daughter is 10 years old on January 1, 2017 she will play 10U (10 and under). Players will be assigned to the age group as noted. In the event a team needs a player to play a game, we will solicit a player from a younger age level to play “up” for that game.
The registration fee includes Softball game Jersey, batting helmets and catcher’s equipment.
We have formed a partnership with Alex MacLean and 7 Deadly Spins. We are now offering hourly semi private lessons (2:1 instructor/player ratio) and a larger group clinic (8:2 player/instructor ratio). We will be holding these on Sundays after 4pm in the month of April (except for Easter Sunday). Details are in the registration system. These sessions will be held Sunday after 4pm (no games or practices will be scheduled at this time).
I encourage special requests on team assignment with the understanding that not all requests can be honored. There are many different factors that I consider with these requests. Such as equal number of players on each team, players’ ability, number of volunteers for each team, etc. If your registration is dependent on a special request to be assigned to a specific team, please do not register as I cannot guarantee special requests can be honored.
Voluntary Winter Workouts
We will be starting winter workouts Sundays starting January 15th at 6pm. We will be holding these workouts based on the number of volunteer parents/coaches we have. This will be set up as a weekly RSVP by the Friday before that Sunday. I will be asking for 1 volunteer parent or coach for every 5 players. If you do not RSVP to me (not a coach or friend) by Friday, you may not be able to participate Sunday depending on the number of volunteers for that Sunday.
The workouts will be held at the SPYA Building at Grange Park. We will start with focusing on just getting the players catching, throwing, pitching and swinging a bat again and work from there as they progress. Any player that also pitches can use this time to come and practice pitching (bring your own catcher/parent). Depending on participation we may look at alternating times. For example, some players from 6 pm – 730 pm and others from 730 pm – 9 pm.
In closing I encourage every parent that has some time during the season to volunteer to assist in our program. Our program and your daughters experience in SPYA Softball is dependent on the quality and number of volunteers we have.
Please check out softball.spya.org throughout the season for information. We will work on keeping all updates including practice and game schedules, game results, photo day schedule, fundraising results, contact info and other information.
